Contamination Control in Food Industries
Food manufacturing facilities are required to comply with some of the world's most stringent hygiene and food safety standards. Every stage of production must be carefully monitored to prevent contamination and ensure that products reaching consumers are safe and compliant with regulatory requirements.
One of the cornerstones of food safety management is the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system, a preventive approach based on identifying, evaluating, and controlling potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards throughout the production process. Rather than addressing contamination after it occurs, HACCP requires food manufacturers to anticipate risks and implement appropriate control measures before product safety can be compromised.
Contamination may originate from multiple sources, including microorganisms, particulate matter, allergens, raw materials, footwear, and wheeled equipment moving between different production areas. Even minimal levels of contamination can significantly affect product quality, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.
For this reason, contamination control should begin long before food comes into direct contact with equipment or packaging materials. Preventive measures implemented at critical access points play a fundamental role in supporting food safety programs and maintaining hygienic production environments.
Consequences of Contamination:
Product contamination
Risks to consumer health
Non-compliance with HACCP requirements
Increased sanitation costs
Product recalls and economic losses
Contamination between areas
Production downtime
Damage to brand reputation
The role of Floors in Contamination Control
Effective contamination control extends beyond food-contact surfaces. Flooring represents one of the largest and most frequently used surfaces within food manufacturing environments and plays an important role in maintaining hygienic conditions.
European Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs establishes specific requirements for floors in areas where food is prepared, treated, or processed. Floor surfaces must be maintained in a sound condition and be easy to clean and disinfect. They are required to be impervious, non-absorbent, washable, and made from non-toxic materials.
These requirements perfectly reflect the preventive philosophy of HACCP. Identifying potential contamination sources and minimizing their impact before they affect production processes are essential elements of an effective food safety strategy.
Every movement of personnel, pallet trucks, carts, and mobile equipment contributes to the introduction and redistribution of contaminants throughout production areas. Footwear and wheels may transport dust, microorganisms, allergens, and food residues between hygiene zones, increasing the risk of cross-contamination if adequate preventive measures are not implemented.
Lower-Risk Area
Movement
Contamination accumulate on the floor
People, carts and material move between areas
Sensitive area
Contaminants can be transferred into high-care areas
Washable Contamination Control Mats:
an additional Barrier against Contamination
Our washable decontamination mats provide an effective preventive solution for contamination control in food manufacturing facilities by helping to reduce the introduction and transfer of contaminants carried by shoes and wheels before they can spread throughout production environments.
Designed for continuous use in demanding industrial environments, our mats combine durability, hygiene, and ease of maintenance. Their washable surface allows them to be repeatedly cleaned and sanitized without compromising performance, making them particularly suitable for facilities operating under strict hygiene protocols.
The material features antibacterial properties tested according to ISO 22196:2011 through the use of silver ion technology integrated into the PVC matrix, contributing to the reduction of bacterial contamination on the mat surface.
Our mats are also:
- resistant to almost all chemical cleaning and sanitizing agents used in food manufacturing facilities;
- suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -15 °C to +100 °C (short-term exposure), allowing their use in both refrigerated and high-temperature production environments;
- available in different colors for visual zoning and hygiene area management;
- fully washable and designed for continuous use in high-traffic production environments.
By supporting contamination control at critical access points, our mats complement HACCP-based preventive strategies and contribute to maintaining hygienic production conditions throughout the manufacturing process.
